As the Chronology Supervisor at Juris Medicus (JM), Orissa Loftin offers support to clients by organizing a detailed index of records with relevant case information to position experts and attorneys for success. Orissa leads her experienced team with “Humble Confidence” and delivers “Quality & Excellence” to colleagues, experts, and clients. Read on to learn about how Orissa found JM, her proudest accomplishment, the value of JM’s process and more. Q: How did you find/why did you choose JM? A: I have a degree in criminal justice and I worked at the medical examiner’s office for nine years, so I have always had a healthy interest in the legal and medical fields. In my previous position, I advanced as far as I could and was looking for a new opportunity. It was then that I found JM by chance and saw an opening for a role as a chronologist. I thought it sounded interesting and I had a lot of the skills necessary to do the job. After my interview, I was very excited about the company, and I am glad JM took a chance on me. Q: What do you like most about your specific department and/or role? A: I enjoy working in the chronology department because we get to see the meat and potatoes of a case. We see how the accident happened, what injuries and treatments occurred, and how the injuries have, or have not, healed. While we do not always know the outcome, it is extremely interesting to put together the index of records for the expert. Q: What internal accomplishment are you most proud of? A: I am most proud of how I have been able to advance in my role at JM. I am now the chronology supervisor, and while there are challenges that come along with this position, I have a great team underneath me. Each member of my team is dedicated to creating the most reliable product for our experts to use. Q: What do you think sets JM apart from competitors or other companies? A: I believe JM’s willingness to go above and beyond to meet deadlines and provide the client with the most suitable expert is what sets JM apart. Q: How do the JM core values align with your own? A: I find that the core values of “Operate as One” and “Humble Confidence” are the two that most align with my own values. I am always ready to help a team member and support my team with whatever task is at hand. I know the value of being humble in your achievements and when it is time to lead, but also when it is time to follow. Q: If you were an attorney-client (or an expert witness), what would you find most valuable about the process at JM? A: If I was an attorney-client, I think the most valuable resource JM provides is our extensive expert panel. We have more than 400 experts in our network covering a wide variety of specialties. JM will also recruit an expert if a client has a need for one in a certain area of the country or in a specialty that we may not have covered yet.

Juris Medicus is proud to have one of 13 certified B-Readers located in Texas on our expert panel. Putting this development into context, there are only 200 B-Readers in the United States, and a grand total of 300 practicing worldwide. B-Readers are a type of classification of doctors who have expertise in how pneumoconiosis, a lung disease, is presented on X-rays. The disease is caused by breathing in asbestos, silica, or coal. The harmful dust particles found in the lungs are often encountered in work environments, like in a coal mine. Pneumoconiosis is often referred to as occupational lung disease or more commonly, “black lung.” This special class of doctors examines the lungs in detail, looking for scarring and other changes that might indicate pneumoconiosis. B-Readers are experts in determining how different dust particles affect the lungs. The result of a B-Read often determines if a person has pneumoconiosis, which treatments might be helpful, and if they are eligible for federal benefits due to occupational dust exposure. At Juris Medicus, we have more than 400 medical experts that cover more than 85 specialties and sub-specialties. Our expert recruiters select medical experts through invitation only and thoroughly vet their appropriate state licensing and certifications. The JM medical recruitment team consists of two incredible women, Sarah Crimmins and Emily Kelley, who have years of experience in the medical field. They are not just knowledgeable; they are dedicated to finding top medical experts to support our clients’ needs. Read on to learn what Sarah and Emily bring to the team and what they enjoy most about their role. Sarah Crimmins, Director of Expert Recruiting & Development Q: How and why did you choose JM? A: I was invited to join Juris Medicus by our founder, Dr. Gilbert Meadows, upon his retirement from private practice as a spinal surgeon in December 2017. I worked as Dr. Meadows’ Clinical Coordinator/Registered Nurse for 25 years. Unlike Dr. Meadows, I was not ready to retire from my professional career at that time. Dr. Meadows felt my nursing background and work acumen would serve JM well as a development officer in the areas of both client and medical expert development. Q: What do you like most about your specific department and/or role? A: I really enjoy the fact that every day at JM is a new beginning. Our expert needs can fluctuate given the types of cases coming in. We may have a medical expert in a requested specialty, but the ideal geography is somewhere other than what we can currently offer. In this scenario, it is my responsibility to get to work doing all that I can to deliver for the client’s needs. When that happens, it’s fun to know that we have been instrumental in finding a “unicorn” expert for a case. Q: What do you think sets JM apart from competitors or other companies? A: I truly feel that we lead the industry with respect to employees who provide the very best support and service. This is both for our clients and the experts we have the honor of working with. Q: How do JM’s core values align with your own? A: I consider myself a servant leader in many aspects of my life. Positive collaboration is also something I like to contribute to. Given these traits, I would say that I strongly identify with the principles of “Humble Confidence” and “Operate as One”. Q: If you were a client, what would you find most valuable about the process at JM? A: Given that I’ve heard the feedback firsthand, I would say that many of our clients appreciate the available pre-case consulting opportunities with our team of nursing specialists to help them determine and navigate their expert needs. Emily Kelley, Expert Recruitment Specialist Q: How and why did you choose JM? A: I was introduced to Juris Medicus by Sarah back in 2014. I was a full-time middle school nurse, and I started working as a chronologist on the side. I came back in 2020 to assist Sarah with expert recruitment tasks, and in June 2022, I was welcomed full-time as an expert recruitment specialist. Q: What do you like most about your specific department and/or role? A: I love working with Sarah! We work together like a well-oiled machine. She and I are like-minded, which I am sure stems from our nursing education at UTHSCSA and our training and working together in the operating room. I also enjoy getting to know the experts. Not only are they technically skilled, intelligent, and impressive on paper—they are excellent people with kind hearts. Q: What accomplishments at JM are you most proud of? A: I am most proud of our collaboration and teamwork when an expert is needed for a case that isn’t represented on our panel. There is such satisfaction in finding the appropriate expert and fulfilling the needs of the client. I love it when everything comes together and it is a win-win! Q: What do you think sets JM apart from competitors or other companies? A: I believe that the caliber of our expert panel combined with the administrative support and customer service we provide sets us above our competitors! Q: If you were a client, what would you find most valuable about the process at JM? A: If I was a client, I would find the JM experts panel to be exemplary and the customer service to be top-notch. Being able to connect with a case manager or account executive to express my needs for a case and knowing they have access to such a robust and diverse panel would ensure my continued business. Also knowing that there are nursing professionals available for consultation is an added value. JM is responsive, professional, and willing to go the extra mile if needed.
